Characteristics

Annual herb, primary stem 30-250 mm tall, simple at first, soon with few to several branches from the base and above, branches decumbent, pubescent with ± retrorse acute hairs up to c. 1 mm long, moderately leafy. Leafblade c. 5-25 x 2-14 mm, elliptic to (rarely) ovate, acute or subacute, tapering into a broad flat petiolar part c. 4-17 mm long (roughly equalling to half as long as blade), margins subentire to sharply toothed, thinly villous particularly on margins and midline on dorsal face, hairs acute, up to 1.5 mm long. Flowers open in sunshine, many in each spike, at first crowded, becoming lax in fruit, primary spike sometimes floriferous almost to base. Bracts adnate to calyx for c. 5-7 mm, lowermost c. 11-28 x 5-8 mm, lanceolate, acute, deeply toothed, villous on lower part, often almost glabrous above, hairs acute, up to 1.3-1.6 mm long. Calyx 6-7 mm long, lips 3-4 mm long, thinly villous with acute hairs up to 1.5-1.8 mm long. Corolla tube 18-20 mm long (throat c. 0.8-1.3 mm in diam.), glabrous or with a few minute glandular hairs, limb of chasmogamous flowers 6-7 mm in diam. (cleistogamous flowers frequently present), almost regular, mouth encircled by long clavate hairs, lobes.2.5-2.8 x 1.5-1.8 mm, oblong, apex rounded, upper surface yellow with an orange to scarlet median bar extending 2/3 of the way up the lobe, backs of lobes dark red to chocolate-brown. Stamens 4, anticous pair exserted, anthers 0.25-0.4 mm long, posticous pair included, anthers 0.8-1.25 mm long. Stigma 34 mm long, exserted. Style 13-14 mm long. Ovary c. 3.5-4 x 1 mm. Capsules 6-10 x 3-3.5 mm. Seeds c. 0.5-0.8 x 0.4-0.5 mm, obscurely angled, colliculate, pallid.
