Annual herb c. 50-250 mm tall, main stem erect, soon branching from the base and above, branches erect, ascending or decumbent, villous with patent acute hairs up to c. 1 mm long, minutely glandular as well, laxly leafy throughout. Leaves 8-24 x 1.75-4.5 mm, scarcely shorter upwards and passing imperceptibly into bracts, oblanceolate, apex obtuse to subacute, base narrowed to a short petiolar part, margins with 1-4 pairs of small teeth in upper half, both surfaces densely pubescent, hairs on lower margins up to 1.5 mm long, to c. 1 mm on blade, minutely glandular as well. Flowers open in sunshine, in long terminal spikes, initially crowded, becoming lax in fruit. Bracts adnate to calyx for 2.5-4 mm, lowermost c. 10-16 x 2-3.5 mm, leaflike. Calyx 5.2-7 mm long, both lips 1-2 mm long, pubescent all over, lobes tipped with longer hairs to c. 1 mm. Corolla tube 6.5-10 mm long (throat 0.8-1 mm in diam.), minutely glandular-puberulous, limb c. 2-4 mm in diam., regular, lobes eventually reflexed, mouth encircled by stiff acute erect hairs, lobes 0.8-2.8 mm long, bifid, broadly Y-shaped, white to pale mauve or pink, yellow to orange around mouth, glabrous. Stamens 2 (posticous pair), included, anthers 0.6-1 mm long. Stigma 1.4-2.5 mm, included or shortly exserted. Style 2-3.6 mm long. Ovary c. 2-2.5 mm long. Capsules c. 5.5 x 2 mm. Seeds c. 0.5-0.6 x 0.4 mm, pale mauve-grey, irregularly wrinkled, obscurely 3-angled, angles marked by very narrow pallid wings, sometimes wanting.
