Annual herb, main stem 30-250 mm long, weak, more or less erect, often simple, sometimes sparingly branched from the base and a little higher, branches decumbent or ascending, villous with long (up to 1-2 mm) delicate acute patent hairs. Leaves few, blade of lowermost leaves c. 6-22 x 3.5-10 mm, ovate to elliptic tapering into a broad flat petiolar part c. 3-12 mm long (roughly half as long as blade), cauline leaves 12-35 x 4-14 mm, elliptic tapering into a short petiolar part, all leaves with margins subentire to distinctly toothed, thinly villous, hairs acute, up to 2-3 mm long especially on lower margins. Flowers up to c. 10 in a lax or crowded spike, open in sunshine. Bracts adnate to calyx for 5-8 mm, lowermost 20-35 x 7-16 mm, oblong-lanceolate, 3-4 pairs of small teeth on upper part, thinly villous with acute hairs up to 2 mm long, tiny (0.1 mm) glandular hairs also present. Calyx 12-17 mm long, lips 3-4 mm long, thinly villous mainly on the ribs, hairs delicate, acute, up to 1.5-2 mm long, minutely glandular as well. Corolla tube 29-35 mm long (throat 1.5-2 mm in diam.), glabrous or with a few scattered minute glands, limb c. 7-12 mm in diam., regular, lobes c. 2.5-4.5 x 1.8-4 mm, deeply bifid, Y-shaped, 'red' or 'magenta' (a crimson patch can be detected at the base of each lobe in some dried specimens), mouth encircled by a broad band of obtuse hairs up to c. 0.4 mm long, these giving way to tiny (less than 0.1 mm) glands on shafts of lobes. Stamens 4, anticous pair exserted, anthers 0.4-0.8 mm long, posticous pair included, 1.5-1.8 mm long. Stigma 2-4 mm long, just included or slightly exserted. Style 21-27 mm long. Ovary c. 5 x 1 mm, nectariferous gland peglike, c. 0.4 mm long. Capsules c. 14 x 7 mm. Seeds c. 2 x 1.7 mm, pallid, irregularly 3-4 winged, colliculate.
