Characteristics

Annual herb, primary stem 10-40 mm tall, often simple, sometimes sparingly branched from the base or higher, pubescent with ± retrorse acute hairs up to 1-1.4 mm long. Leaves few (1-3 pairs), c. 4-12 x 1.7-4 mm, spathulate, obtuse to subacute, margins entire, both surfaces pubescent, upper more densely than lower, hairs acute, up to c. 1 mm long particularly on lower margins. Flowers c. 2-15 in a dense terminal spike, open in sunshine. Bracts adnate to calyx for 2-3 mm, lowermost c. 5-15 x 2.8-5.8 mm, ovate to spathulate, upper surface densely pubescent, hairs acute, c. 0.6-1 mm long, up to 1-1.8 mm on margins, lower surface glabrous to pubescent, often showing a gradation in pubescence from outer to inner bracts. Calyx c. 4-5.5 mm long, lips 1.7-2 mm long, pubescent, hairs acute, up to 1 mm long. Corolla tube c. 8.5-11 mm long (throat 0.8-1 mm in diam.), minutely glandular-puberulous, limb c. 3.5-5 mm in diam., nearly regular, mouth encircled by a band of acute hairs, sometimes orange-coloured, lobes 1.5-2 x 0.8-1.2 mm, elliptic, entire, creamy-white above, mauve below, yellow/orange 'eye'. Stamens 4, anticous pair exserted, anthers 0.5-0.7 mm long, posticous pair at least partially exserted, anthers 0.5-0.7 mm long. Stigma 1 mm long, partly exserted. Style 5-8 mm long. Ovary c. 1.3 x 0.5 mm. Capsules c. 4 x 2 mm. Seeds c. 0.5 x 0.3 mm, obscurely angled, colliculate, bright mauve when young, whitish at maturity. Flowering and fruiting in September and October.
