Annual herb, stems c. 10-130 mm long, primary one simple, erect, soon branching from the base and sometimes higher, branches decumbent, simple to sparingly branched, very minutely glandular, coarse patent acute hairs up to 0.7-2 mm long as well, distantly leafy. Leaf blade c. 7-25 x 2.5-12 mm, elliptic to ovate-elliptic, subacute, base tapering into a broad flat petiolar part c. 3-17 mm long (roughly equalling to about half as long as blade), margins entire to obscurely or distinctly toothed in upper part, young leaves thinly villous, hairs almost confined to petiolar part in older leaves, acute, up to 1-2 mm long, minutely glandular as well. Flowers open in sunshine, in dense terminal spikes, elongating in fruit, the lowermost flowers then often distant, spike seldom accounting for more than half total stem length. Bracts adnate to calyx for 2-4.5 mm, lowermost 7-23 x 1.7-6 mm, mostly 3-6 times as long as broad, leaf-like, acute hairs up to 2-3 mm long, minutely glandular as well. Calyx 6.5-8 mm long, lips 1.5-3 mm, minutely glandular, coarse patent acute hairs up to 1-2.4 mm long particularly on ribs and tips. Corolla tube 22-27 mm long (throat 1.25-1.6 mm in diam.), glandular-puberulous, hairs up to 0.1-0.2 mm long, limb 6.5-11 mm in diam., regular, mouth encircled by stiff acute hairs, lobes 2.4-5 x 1.4-3 mm, spathulate, apex rounded to slightly retuse, white to bright mauve above, yellow to red 'star' around mouth, the rays extending well onto the shaft of the lobe, orange to dark red-brown below. Stamens 4, anticous pair exserted, anthers 0.8-1.2 mm long, posticous pair included, anthers 1.8-2.5 mm long. Stigma 1-3.5 mm long, shortly exserted. Style 18-20 mm long. Ovary 3-4 x 1-1.2 mm. Capsules c. 5-7 x 3 mm. Seeds c. 0.4-0.6 x 0.3-0.4 mm, obscurely angled, colliculate, pallid. Flowering mainly between July and October, but as early as April.
