Herb mostly 100-300 mm high, annual or sometimes persisting for more than one season, taproot becoming woody, rarely exceeding 4 mm diam., stem simple or branched from the base, clad in retrorse white hairs, leafy, often with axillary leaf tufts. Leaves mostly 15-45(-70) x (3-)4-8 mm, spreading, elliptic, base tapered, apex obtuse to subacute, margins entire or with a few small callose teeth, often somewhat flashy, nearly glabrous or with coarse hairs on the margins and midline below. Flowers several to many in a crowded head, (sometimes elongating in fruit) opening at dusk or in dull light and then sweetly scented. Bracts adnate to calyx for 2.54 mm, resembling the leaves but often shorter and broader. Calyx 8-14 mm long, lips 4-7 mm long, glabrous except for hairs on margins, and occasionally a few on keels. Corolla tube 25-50 mm long, pubescent, hairs usually glandular, up to 0.1-0.5 mm long, rarely with few to many eglandular hairs as well, 0.4-0.7 mm long, limb held horizontally, regular; mouth with circlet of long unicellular hairs; lobes 5-9 mm long, deeply notched, crimson and glandular-puberulous outside, white inside, eglandular or with a few glandular hairs near the base. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 1.4-1.8 mm long, shortly exserted, 2 posticous ones included, 2.8-3.8 mm long. Capsule 10-14 x 4-5 mm. Seeds c. 1-1.3 x 1 mm, angled, colliculate, pallid. Flowering in any month.
