Characteristics

Annual herb, primary stem c. 20-50 mm long, simple, soon branching from the base, branches simple, decumbent, pubescent with patent acute hairs up to c. 0.5 mm long, minutely glandular as well. Leaves few, blade c. 3-8 x 2-6 mm, ovate to elliptic tapering into a broad flat petiolar part 3-8 mm long (roughly equalling blade in length), subacute, margins entire, both surfaces pubescent with acute hairs up to 1-1.5 mm long, minutely glandular as well. Flowers crowded in a dense terminal spike, open in sunshine. Bracts adnate to calyx for c. 2.5 mm, lowermost c. 7-11 x 2.5-5 mm, ± spathulate, obtuse to subacute, pubescent all over, acute hairs up to 1.5-2.6 mm long, minutely glandular as well, both short glandular and short acute hairs forming a fine dense pubescence underlying the long coarse hairs. Calyx 5-6 mm long, lips 1 mm, pubescent with acute hairs up to 1 mm long, minutely glandular as well. Corolla tube c. 13-15 mm long (throat c. 1.3-1.5 mm in diam.), glandular-puberulous, hairs up to c. 0.15 mm long, limb c. 8-11 mm in diam., ± regular, mouth encircled by acute hairs and there with a crimson star (visible in dried state), the rays extending well up the shaft of the lobes, lobes c. 3.8-4.5 x 2.8-4.5 mm, broadly spathulate, entire, mauve. Stamens 4, anticous pair exserted, anthers 0.8 mm long, posticous pair included, anthers 1.5-1.6 mm long. Stigma 2-3 mm long, exserted. Style 10-11 mm. Ovary c. 3 x 0.8 mm. Capsules (few seen) c. 5 x 2.2 mm. Seeds c. 1 x 0.6 mm, obscurely angled, colliculate, mauvish-grey.
