Characteristics

Annual herb, primary stem 10-100 mm tall, simple or with a pair of branches from the base, these ascending or decumbent, they and the primary stem in all but the very smallest plants with a pair of branches, each subtended by a leaf, about midway or lower, pubescent with patent acute hairs up to 0.5-1 mm long, minutely glandular-puberulous as well. Leaves few, usually two radical and only one pair on each branch, blade 3-11 x 2-6 mm tapering into a flat petiolar part 1.5-10 mm long (roughly equalling blade), ovate to elliptic, apex subacute, margins entire to obscurely toothed, pubescent with acute hairs, longest (up to 1-1.5 mm) on margins especially of petiolar part. Flowers up to c. 15, often fewer, initially crowded in a head, elongating into a spike in fruit, open in sunshine. Bracts adnate to calyx for 2-3 mm, lowermost 4-15 x 2-7 mm, smaller upwards, ovate in upper half then contracted into a broad shaft, pubescent on both surfaces, hairs often sparser on posticous face, longest hairs on lower margins, up to 1-1.7 mm long. Calyx 3-5 mm long, lips 0.6-1.2 mm, pubescent with acute hairs up to 0.5-1 mm long. Corolla tube 4-8.5 mm long (throat 0.7-1 mm in diam.), very minutely glandular-puberulous, limb 2.54 mm in diam., nearly regular, mouth either glabrous or partially encircled by a few acute hairs, lobes 1-1.8 x 0.6-1 mm, narrowly oblong with expanded tip, shortly bifid to entire (in one flower), bright purplish-pink above, with a yellow/orange star-shaped patch around mouth, sometimes with a crimson fleck as well at base of each lobe. Stamens 4, posticous pair included, anthers 0.6 mm long (very rarely reduced to a single tiny anther), anticous pair exserted, anthers 0.2 mm long. Stigma 0.8-1.5 mm long, exserted. Style 2.5-5 mm long. Ovary c. 1.2 x 0.6 mm. Capsules 4-5 x 2.5-2.7 mm. Seeds c. 0.4 x 0.3 mm, subglobose when fully ripe, pale amber-colour, strongly colliculate.
