Characteristics

Annual herb, primary stem 10-80 mm long, erect, simple or branched once from the base and sometimes another pair of branches higher up, branches decumbent, pubescent with patent glandular hairs up to c. 1 mm long. Leaves few, c. 12-30 x 3-12 mm, elliptic tapering to a flat petiolar base sometimes almost as long as the blade in the radical leaves, much shorter upwards, ± acute, margins subentire to distinctly and sharply toothed, both surfaces glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 1-1.5 mm long, very occasional acute hairs to 2 mm long also present especially on lower margins. Flowers up to c. 10, crowded at first, elongating into a dense spike, open in sunshine. Bracts adnate to calyx for 3.5-5 mm, lowermost c. 22-32 x 6-9 mm, oblong-lanceolate, 3-6 pairs of sharp narrow patent teeth in upper half, softly villous with glandular hairs up to 0.7-1.5 mm long, acute hairs as well to 1.5-2 mm. Calyx 11-15 mm long, lips 3-3.5 mm, pubescent mainly on the ribs with delicate glandular hairs up to c. 0.7 mm long, some acute hairs as well mainly at tips of lobes. Corolla tube c. 30-38 mm long (throat 2-2.3 mm in diam.), sparsely and very minutely glandular, limb c. 14-18 mm in diam., regular, lobes c. 5.5-7 x 5-7 mm, deeply bifid, Y-shaped, the lobes lobed again, reddish below, pinkish-mauve above, yellow in throat sometimes with an orange (or scarlet?) star-shaped patch around mouth, densely glandular there, the glands (up to 0.1 mm long) extending up the shaft of the lobe. Stamens 4, anticous pair exserted, anthers 1-1.4 mm long, posticous pair included, anthers 2-3 mm long. Stigma 2-7 mm long, just reaching mouth or shortly exserted. Style 18-28 mm long. Ovary c. 3 x 0.8 mm, nectariferous gland peglike, c. 1.1 mm long. Capsule c. 11 x 5 mm. Seeds all immature but winged and colliculate.
