Characteristics

Annual herb 100-310 mm tall, main stem erect, soon sparingly branched from the base and above, branches erect, ascending or decumbent, villous with patent acute hairs up to 1 mm long, minutely glandular as well, laxly leafy throughout, all but the lowermost 1 or 2 pairs bearing an axillary flower. Leaves: lowermost 11-30 x 3-7 mm, scarcely shorter but often narrower upwards, oblanceolate, apex ± acute, base narrowed but scarcely petiolar except in the lowermost pair, margins with 2-6 pairs of small teeth in upper half, uppermost leaves (bracts) sometimes ± entire, both surfaces thinly villous, hairs up to c. 1.5-3 mm long particularly on lower margins and backs. Flowers open in sunshine, solitary in the leaf axils, forming long, lax, many-flowered spikes. Bracts adnate to calyx tube for c. 2-3 mm, lowermost c. 10-30 x 3.5-7 mm, lanceolate, leaf-like. Calyx 5-6 mm long, both anticous and posticous lips 1-3 mm long, shortly pubescent all over, hairs at tips and on keels up to c. 0.8-1 mm long. Corolla tube 8.2-10 mm long (throat 0.7-1 mm in diam.), minutely glandular-puberulous, limb 2.5-3.6 mm in diam., regular, lobes eventually reflexed, mouth encircled by stiff acute erect hairs, lobes 0.8-1.4 mm long, bifid, broadly Y-shaped, creamy-white fading to ochre-yellow, no coloured 'eye' reported and none visible in dried material. Stamens 2 (posticous pair), anthers 0.6-0.7 mm long, included. Stigma 1.5-2.5 mm long, included. Style 3.7-5.3 mm long. Ovary 2-2.5 x 0.8-1 mm. Capsules 5-7 x 2-2.5 mm. Seeds c. 0.5-0.7 x 0.4-0.5 mm, pale mauve-grey, irregularly wrinkled, obscurely angled, angles marked by very narrow pallid wings, sometimes wanting.
