Characteristics

Annual herb, primary stem 13-250 mm tall, solitary and simple, or several stems eventually developing from base, these erect or decumbent, often simple, but often with leaf tufts indicating ability to branch, occasionally branches developed, pubescent with acute retrorse appressed hairs up to 0.5-0.7 mm long, minutely glandular as well, often nude between radical leaves and inflorescence, sometimes with a few pairs of leaves. Leaves: radical leaves several, loosely rosetted, blade c. 3-30 x 2-15 mm, ovate to elliptic tapering into a broad flat petiolar part c. 2-15 mm long (about equalling blade to 2/3 as long), cauline leaves c. 4-27 x 1.2-10 mm, elliptic tapering to a short petiolar part, all leaves subentire to obscurely or distinctly toothed, upper surface sometimes glabrous, usually thinly pubescent with acute hairs up to c. 1 mm long, lower surface glabrous except on midline, acute hairs up to 1-1.5 mm long on margins. Flowers up to c. 10 in a terminal head not or scarcely elongating in fruit, opening at dusk but sometimes cleistogamous. Bracts adnate to calyx for 3.5-7 mm, lowermost c. 8-20 x 1-4.5 mm, linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, entire or with 1 or 2 pairs of teeth, variable in pubescence but always with long (up to 1.2-1.8 mm) acute hairs on the margins, the inner face pubescent, the outer glabrous to shortly pubescent, the hairs acute, up to 0.7 mm long (but often much shorter), retrorse. Calyx 4.5-8 mm long, lips 0.6-1 mm long, usually puberulous to pubescent all over. Corolla tube 17-25 mm long (throat 1-1.8 mm in diam.), glandular-puberulous, limb (of chasmogamous flowers) 5-10 mm in diam., almost regular, mouth glabrous, yellow to bright scarlet in the throat, the colour in an almost regular ring around the mouth, lobes c. 1.5-4.3 x 1-3.2 mm, broadened at the tips, creamy-to lemon-yellow above, maroon to purplish-brown below. Stamens 4, anticous pair exserted, anthers 0.4-1.4 mm long, posticous anthers included, anthers 0.6-1.8 mm long. Stigma 1-4 mm long, scarcely exserted. Style 11-20 mm long. Ovary 3.5-4.5 x 1 mm. Capsules c. 6-9 x 34 mm. Seeds c. 0.4-0.6 x 0.3-0.4 mm, obscurely angled, colliculate, pallid.
