Annual herb often flowering in seedling stage, stems 10-140 mm long, erect to prostrate, initially simple, soon branching from the base and more sparingly above, pilose, hairs up to 0.75-1 mm long, ± retrorse, stems leafless when simple, later a leaf developing at each forking. Leaves mostly radical, few, 7-30 x 2.5-7 mm, spathulate, 1/2-2/3 total length petiolar, apex ± acute, both surfaces pilose with acute hairs up to 1 mm long, minutely and sparsely glandular as well, margins entire or with a few small teeth in upper half, hairs up to 1-2 mm long particularly on petiolar part. Flowers in crowded spikes, open in sunshine. Bracts adnate to calyx for 2-4 mm, lowermost 7-16 x 2-5 mm, smaller upwards, leaf-like, ovate to elliptic above contracted into an oblong basal half, ± acute, both surfaces pilose with hairs up to 0.5 mm long, hairs on margins up to 0.75-2 mm long. Calyx 5-6.5 mm long, both lips 1.2-2 mm long, pilose, hairs on keels up to 1-1.5 mm long, minutely glandular as well. Corolla tube 12.5-19 mm long, (throat 1.3-1.7 mm in diam.), pubescent with acute hairs 0.25-0.4 mm long, minutely glandular as well, exclusively so on backs of lobes, limb 7.8-12 mm in diam., regular, held horizontally, lobes eventually reflexed, mouth encircled by stiff acute erect hairs, lobes 2.8-5 mm long, bifid, broadly Y-shaped, pink to mauve, yellow to bright orange star-shaped patch around mouth, glabrous. Stamens 2 (posticous pair), anthers 1.8-2 mm long, included, tips sometimes just visible in mouth. Stigma 1-4 mm long, exserted. Style 9-15 mm. Ovary 1.75-3.5 x 0.6-1 mm. Capsules 5-7 x 2.5-3 mm. Seeds c. 0.5-0.6 x 0.4-0.5 mm, pallid faintly tinged mauve-grey, irregularly wrinkled, obscurely angled, angles marked by very narrow pallid wings sometimes wanting.
