Characteristics

Annual herb, primary stem at first solitary but soon branching from the extreme base, branches c. 20-140 mm long, simple or branching very low down, erect or decumbent, pubescent with acute ± retrorse hairs up to c. 0.5-0.7 mm long, laxly leafy. Leaves c. 7-20 x 1.5-6 mm, spathulate, elliptic or oblong, the lowermost in particular tapering into a broad flat petiolar part, subentire to distinctly toothed, acute hairs up to c. 1 mm long on margins, otherwise glabrous or very nearly so. Flowers up to c. 10 in a terminal capitate cluster, not elongating in fruit, opening at dusk or in dull light. Bracts adnate to calyx for 4-5 mm, lowermost c. 9-14 x 24 mm, oblong-lanceolate, toothed, tips recurved, acute hairs up to 1.5-2 mm long on margins, backs glabrous to puberulous. Calyx 5.5-8 mm long, lips 1 mm long, puberulous all over. Corolla tube 21-31 mm long (throat c. 1.6-2 mm in diam.), glandular-puberulous, limb 10-15 mm in diam., almost regular, mouth glabrous to partially or fully ringed with small clavate hairs, bright scarlet in throat extending out onto bases of lobes to form a slightly raised star around the mouth, lobes c. 4.3-6 x 3.2-5 mm, broadened at the tips, bright yellow above, chocolate-brown below. Stamens 4, anticous pair exserted, anthers 1.4-1.7 mm long, posticous pair included, anthers 2.3-2.8 mm long. Stigma c. 3-6 mm long, scarcely to well exserted. Style c. 15-30 mm long. Ovary c. 3.5-5 x 1 mm. Capsules c. 7-8 x 3.5-4 mm. Seeds not seen.
