Characteristics

Annual herb often flowering in seedling stage, stems 10-140 mm long, erect, ascending, decumbent or prostrate, initially simple, soon branching from the base and more sparingly above, pubescent to almost glabrous particularly near base, hairs up to 0.2 mm long, acute, ±retrorse, stems leafless when simple, later a leaf developing at each forking. Leaves mostly radical, few, 12-40 x 3-9 mm, spathulate, total length petiolar, apex ± obtuse, upper surface sparsely and minutely pubescent, lower glabrous, margins entire to obscurely toothed with sparse hairs up to 1.1 mm long. Flowers in crowded, eventually much elongated, spikes, the primary stem sometimes floriferous nearly to the base, flowers open in sunshine. Bracts adnate to calyx tube for 2.5-5 mm, lowermost c. 8-25 x 2.8-9 mm, smaller upwards, leaf-like, mostly ± ovate above contracted into an oblong basal half, subacute, upper surface pubescent with acute hairs up to 0.25 mm long, lower surface either glabrous or with scattered minute hairs particularly in lower half, lower margins with hairs up to 0.4-1 mm long. Calyx 5.5-8 mm long, both lips 1-2 mm long, minutely pubescent, tips with hairs up to 0.4 mm long, these sometimes on posticous keels as well. Corolla tube 14-24 mm long, (throat 1.3-1.7 mm in diam.), pubescent with both glandular and eglandular hairs, either predominating, glandular hairs less than 0.1 mm long, acute hairs up to 0.2-0.25 mm long, limb 9-16 mm in diam., regular, held horizontally, lobes eventually reflexed, mouth encircled by stiff acute erect hairs, lobes 3.5-7 mm long, bifid, broadly Y-shaped, rich mauve to red-violet above, yellow to bright orange star-shaped patch, around mouth, glabrous. Stamens 2 (posticous pair), included, 1.5-2 mm long. Stigma 1.5-4 mm long, exserted. Style 11-20 mm long. Ovary 3-4 x 0.8-1 mm. Capsules 6-7 x 2.5-3 mm. Seeds c. 0.5-0.6 x 0.4-0.5 mm, pale mauve-grey, irregularly wrinkled, obscurely angled, angles marked by very narrow pallid wings, sometimes wanting.
