Annual herb, stem c. 30 mm high, branched from the base, branches decumbent, villous with long acute patent hairs. Leaves: blade c. 7-10 x 5-10 mm, ovate tapering into abroad flat petiolar part 7-8 mm long (roughly equalling the blade), margins serrate, both surfaces pilose with acute hairs up to 3 mm long. Flowers c. 10 in a short crowded spike, open in sunshine. Bracts adnate to calyx for c. 4.5 mm, c. 10 x 5 mm, oblong with 2-3 pairs of long narrow teeth towards apex, shaggy with acute hairs up to c. 2.5 mm long. Calyx c. 7-8 mm long, lips 1.5 mm, villous mainly at tips of lobes, hairs acute, up to 1.5 mm long. Corolla tube c. 22 x 1.5 mm in throat, very minutely and sparsely glandular, limb c. 7.5 mm across, regular, lobes c. 2.5 x 2.5 mm, bifid, Y-shaped, each 'arm' lobed again, 'pinkish', mouth fringed with obtuse hairs up to c. 0.5 mm long, these giving way to tiny glands on shafts of lobes. Stamens 4, anticous pair exserted, anthers 1.25 mm long, posticous pair included, anthers 2.5 mm long. Stigma 1 mm long, just reaching mouth. Style 18 mm long. Ovary swelling into fruit, nectariferous gland c. 0.5 mm long. Capsules not seen.

Like Z. pumila but without a thick-textured orange star around corolla mouth, also like Z. inflata but with a smaller calyx, ± 7-8 mm long, shorter corolla tube, ± 22 mm long, and longer anthers (1.25 and 2.5 vs. 0.4-0.8 and 1.5-1.8 mm long).
