Characteristics

Annual herb, primary stem 10-150 mm tall, simple or with 2-6 branches from the base, these ascending or decumbent, simple or with a pair of branches, pubescent with patent acute hairs up to 1-1.4 mm long, minutely glandular-puberulous as well. Leaves few, only 1 or 2 pairs above radical pair, blade 4-20 x 1.5-11 mm, tapering into a flat petiolar part 2-16 mm long (rarely about equalling the blade, usually roughly 1/2-1/3 as long), usually elliptic, rarely lowermost pair ovate, subacute, margins entire to very obscurely toothed, both surfaces pubescent with acute hairs, those on margins up to 1-2 mm long, glandular-puberulous as well. Flowers up to c. 30, often fewer, initially crowded in a head, elongating into a spike in fruit, open in sunshine. Bracts adnate to calyx for 2-4 mm, lowermost c. 7-15 x 2.5-5 mm, smaller upwards, lanceolate-elliptic, ± entire, pubescent on both surfaces, glandular-puberulous as well, acute eglandular hairs on margins up to 1.5-2.3 mm long, those on backs of bracts up to 0.8-1.2 mm long. Calyx 5-6.5 mm long, lips 1.5-2 mm long, pubescent with acute hairs up to 1-1.5 mm long, glandular-puberulous as well. Corolla tube 15-26 mm long (throat 1.2-2 mm in diam.), glandular-puberulous (hairs up to 0.1-0.2 mm long), limb (5.5-)8.5-15 mm in diam, regular, mouth encircled by long acute hairs, lobes eventually reflexed, (2-)3.2-6 x (1.6-)2.2-6 mm, bifid, broadly Y-shaped, mauve to bright purplish-pink above, orange below, orange/yellow star-shaped patch around mouth, rays extending well up shaft of lobes. Stamens 4, posticous pair included, anthers 1.5-2 mm long, anticous pair exserted, anthers 0.6-1.2 mm long. Stigma 1-3 mm long, exserted. Style 12.5-21.5 mm long. Ovary 2-3 x 0.8 mm. Capsules 4-6 x 2-3 mm. Seeds: ripe seeds not seen. It flowers chiefly between July and September, though there is a record as early as May, and another as late as December.
