Characteristics

Shrub or small tree usually 2–3 m. high, sometimes several-stemmed; bark grey, with scattered straight or slightly recurved spines and prickles 2–8 mm. long.. Leaves 15–35 cm. long, rusty pubescent or greyish tomentose to glabrescent; rhachis sometimes sparsely armed; petiolules 0-1(–1.5) mm. long; leaflets 3–4 pairs, opposite or subopposite, ovate to elliptic, the first pair more ovate to deltoid, 4–12.2 cm. long, 2.5–6 cm. broad, acute to acuminate at the apex, broadly cuneate to shallowly cordate at the base, obscurely crenate-serrate; lateral nerves 6–10 pairs.. Inflorescence a terminal pyramidal panicle 10–18 cm. long; peduncle pubescent; flowers clustered, on pedicels 0.5–1 mm. long.. Sepals 4, slightly united at the base, ovate to subcircular, 0.6–1 mm. long, ciliolate.. Petals 4, 1.5–3.5 mm. long, 1–1.3 mm. broad.. Male flowers: stamens 4, 2–3 mm. long; gynophore pulviniform, glabrous; vestigial ovary obsoletely lobed.. Female flowers not seen.. Fruit globose, 4.5–6 mm. in diameter, ripening brown, reticulate and densely gland-dotted.. Seed subglobose, 4.5–5.5 mm. in diameter, glossy black.
