Characteristics

Strongly rhizomatous. Flowering culms 3–30 cm high, many-noded. Leaves: basal sheaths glabrous; ligule a ciliolate membrane; blade flat, involute or convolute, 1–16 cm long, 0.5–4 mm wide, obtuse, rather rigid. Inflorescences 0.5–5 cm long. Spikelets attached truncately to pedicel apex, obliquely oblong, lanceolate or ovate, laterally compressed, 2–5 mm long, purple or pale (when very mature). Lower glume absent. Upper glume obliquely oblong, lanceolate or ovate, 2–5 mm long; awn (0–) 1–3 (–4) mm long. Lemma oblong or ovate, 1–3 mm long. Palea much shorter than lemma body. Caryopsis laterally compressed.
