Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Aira

Characteristics

Small, erect, reddish green or greyish green tufts, 3-20-(25) cm, with spike-like panicles. Leaf-sheath firmly membranous, sparsely ribbed, very minutely scabrid below ligule or entirely smooth. Ligule (0.6)-1.5-3.2 mm, tapered, shortly denticulate, abaxially usually sparsely scabrid. Leaf-blade 0.5-4 cm × 0.3-0.5 mm diam., inrolled, smooth, or abaxially sparsely scabrid on ribs; margins minutely scabrid, tip obtuse. Culm internodes usually densely scabrid below nodes, or smooth throughout. Panicle (0.5)-1-4.5 cm × 3-9 mm, oblong or lanceolate; rachis, short erect branches and pedicels rather sparsely, finely scabrid. Spikelets green, tinged purple. Glumes c. 3 mm, 1-3-nerved, elliptic-lanceolate, acute, often scabrid near tip, keel scabrid, margins minutely ciliate-scabrid. Lemma 2.5-3 mm, ˜ glumes, smooth and firmly membranous in lower ½, densely minutely scabrid towards bifid hyaline apex; awn 3.2-4.2 mm, from lower ⅓ of lemma, column brown, finely twisted. Palea narrower than lemma, keels glabrous, rounded. Callus ringed by minute hairs. Rachilla very short, glabrous, prolonged. Anthers c. 0.3 mm. Caryopsis 1.5-2 ×c. 0.5 mm.
More
Culms 3–25 cm high; mid-culm internodes glabrous or minutely puberulous. Leaves scattered along culms; ligule 2–4.3 mm long; blade folded, inrolled or convolute, mostly 0.5–5 cm long, 0.2–0.6 mm wide; adaxially sparsely puberulous. Panicles contracted, spike-like, 0.5–4 (–5) cm long, pallid to green or silvery; peduncle usually glabrous or sparsely scabrous; primary branches erect to narrowly spreading. Spikelets 2.5–3.8 mm long; pedicel 0.5–2.1 mm long. Glumes about equalling florets, sometimes scaberulous on surface towards apex; lower glume 2.5–4 mm long, 1-veined or 3-veined with lateral veins short; upper glume (2.5–) 3–3.8 mm long, acuminate, 3-veined with lateral veins short. Lemmas 2.5–3.5 mm long, acuminate, bifid, scaberulous at apex, usually both awned; awn arising from c. 1/4 way up from base, mostly 2.5–4 mm long. Palea narrowly ovate or oblanceolate, with intercostal regions scaberulous. Caryopsis 1.4–1.6 mm long, deeply grooved.
Culms tufted, 5–20 cm, scabrous below the nodes; sheaths and the very short, usually involute and twisted blades scaberulous; infl 1–5 cm, dense and almost spike-like, with short appressed branches, the pedicels mostly shorter than the spikelets; glumes 2.7–3.3 mm; lemmas 2.5–3 mm, both awned, the awn 3.3–3.7 mm; 2n=14. Native of Europe, intr. in dry sandy soil near the coast, from s. N.Y. to Va.
Delicate annual to 180 mm high; erect, spreading or prostrate. Leaf blade 30 x 1 mm; sheath smooth to finely scaberulous. Inflorescence a spike-like panicle, branches erect, very short; pedicels mostly shorter than spikelets. Spikelet 3 mm long; glumes acute, scaberulous in upper 1/3; lemma awned from a 1/4 above the base; awn 3.5-3.7 mm long, column 1.5 mm long; anther 0.2 mm long.
Annual to 20 cm. Leaves linear, ligule membranous, to 3 mm long. Spikelets in a spike-like panicle, 3 mm long, lemmas awned from halfway up back.
