Aira L.

Hairgrass (en), Aira (fr)

Genus

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae

Characteristics

Small slender annuals, caespitose, bisexual. Leaves: ligule an unfringed membrane; blade rolled or once-folded in bud, setaceous. Inflorescences paniculate, contracted and spike-like to open with spreading, very slender branchlets ending in single spikelets. Spikelets pedicellate, laterally compressed, disarticulating above glumes and between florets, with 2 bisexual florets; rachilla prolonged beyond uppermost bisexual floret or terminated by it, glabrous, with extension naked. Glumes 2, ±equal, ±equalling or exceeding florets, awnless, sometimes keeled, scaberulous along keel and margins towards apex, 1–3-nerved. Callus short, blunt, usually shortly silky with straight white hairs. Lemmas 1-awned or awnless, distinctly firmer than glumes, becoming firm, chartaceous, sometimes keeled, 5-nerved; awn when present dorsal, geniculate, with twisted column. Palea slightly shorter than and tightly clasped by lemma, bidentate. Lodicules membranous. Stamens 3. Ovary glabrous. Caryopsis adhering to lemma and/or palea, fusiform, longitudinally grooved; hilum short; endosperm hard.
More
Annuals, small. Leaf blades rolled. Inflorescence an open or contracted panicle. Spikelets small, laterally compressed, florets 2, both alike, bisexual, separated by very short internode, disarticulating below each floret; rachilla not extended beyond upper floret; glumes persistent, equal, enclosing florets, ovate, membranous, shining, 1(–3)-veined, apex acute; floret callus small, usually shortly bearded laterally, rarely glabrous; lemmas ovate, rounded on back, membranous becoming firm at maturity, indistinctly 5-veined, glabrous, upper part scaberulous to scabrid, awned from lower back or lower floret awnless, apex 2-toothed; awn geniculate with twisted column; palea slightly shorter than lemma. Anthers small. Caryopsis fusiform. 2n = 14, 28.
Spikelets 2-fld, disarticulating above the glumes and between the lemmas; rachilla very short, not prolonged beyond the upper palea; glumes subequal, exceeding the lemmas, ovate, obscurely 1–3-veined, acute or acuminate; lemmas firm, elongate, rounded on the back, obscurely 5-veined below, tapering into 2 pale setaceous teeth, one or both lemmas awned; awn arising from below the middle, bent, the straight stout lower part about equaling the body of the lemma, the slender terminal part longer, exsert; palea enclosed by the involute lemma; small annual grasses with short, very narrow blades and diffuse or spike-like panicles. 12, irregularly cosmop. (Aspris)
Small annuals, with slender culms and delicate open, or sometimes contracted, panicles. Spikelets small, 2-flowered, both florets bisexual, the rhachilla glabrous and very short between the florets, minutely produced beyond the upper floret; glumes delicately membranous, 1-nerved, glabrous; lemma lanceolate, shorter than the glumes, faintly 5-nerved, 2-toothed, rounded on the back, dorsally awned or awnless; callus minute, obtuse; stamens 3; stigmas 2
Lemmas shorter than the glumes, subequal, slightly distant, broadly lanceolate, dorsally rounded, faintly 5-nerved, very thinly membranous, hyaline, broadly lanceolate, with the apex acute to acuminate and usually shortly 2-dentate, margins usually involute, dorsally awned from beneath the middle, rarely awnless; awn geniculate, twisted below the bend (straight when moistened); callus rather short, obtuse, pilose or glabrous.
Spikelets strongly laterally compressed, pedicelled, rather small, strictly 2-flowered, awned or rarely muticous; rhachilla disarticulating above the glumes and between the florets, very shortly produced beyond the superior floret, glabrous; florets 2, both bisexual, similar.
Caryopsis oblong to narrowly elliptic in outline, tightly enclosed by the lemma and palea; hilum oblong, rather small; embryo subcircular, 1/3-1/4 the length of the caryopsis.
Glumes 2, subequal and similar, persistent, thinly membranous, usually hyaline, exceeding the florets except for the awns, 1-nerved, keeled, muticous.
Paleas slightly shorter than the corresponding lemmas, 2-nerved, 2-keeled, narrowly oblong, with the apex 2-dentate.
Ovary glabrous; styles distinct, short, stigmas plumose, rather short, laterally exserted.
Inflorescence a panicle, many-flowered, usually open.
