Characteristics

Perennial scandent or scrambling shrubs or small trees, evergreen; latex white. Stems without spines. Leaves petiolate, opposite or 3–5-whorled; lamina entire, herbaceous to coriaceous, glabrous or with scattered basifixed hairs; colleters absent. Inflorescences terminal or extra-axillary, pedunculate. Calyx with or without colleters. Corolla campanulate–funnel-shaped; tube cylindrical to obconical, with corolline corona present, surmounted by tufts of hairs; lobes sinistrorse in bud. Stamens included, inserted in upper part of tube, concealed by scales, not adherent to style-head; anthers oblong to lanceolate, adherent to style-head. Disc cupuliform, 5-lobed or subentire. Style-head cylindrical, bifid. Fruit an aculeate, woody follicle, 2-locular, syncarpous, with long soft spines. Seeds 2–4, imbricate, compressed, ellipsoidal, unwinged, ecomose.
