Characteristics

Shrub to 3 m high, rarely climbing. Young shoots hispid, rarely ± glabrous, with internodes 4-angled, not grooved. Leaves in whorls of 3–5 (usually 4), stiff, glossy, glabrous or finely hispid when young; petiole 1–3 mm long; lamina elliptic to slightly oblanceolate, (1–) 1.5–3.5 cm long, (0.5–) 1–2.5 cm wide, attenuate at base, obtuse to acute, rounded or sometimes minutely apiculate; venation raised and usually prominent above. Inflorescence and flowers as for A. ruscifolia. Fruit bright orange (illustrated in Coyne 2011).
