Characteristics

Bulbous plants with leaves biflabellately arranged, i.e. in 2 opposite fans. Leaves often falcate and strap-shaped, without intact apices and midrib indistinct, margin scabrous. Scape lateral, solid, compressed, with an inflorescence of 3–60 flowers subtended by 2 free bracts. Flowers pedicellate, hypocrateriform, with a long narrow tube and spreading to recurved linear to lanceolate perianth-segments. Filaments from the base of the segments, filiform. Ovary with many ovules per locule; style long, with undivided stigma. Capsule membranous, indehiscent or opening irregularly. Seeds fleshy, subglobose, pale green, often germinating in the fruit.
