Characteristics

Perennials, caespitose, rhizomatous, bisexual. Leaves mostly basal; ligule an unfringed membrane; blade rolled in bud, sharp-pointed, blue-green. Inflorescences paniculate. Spikelets pedicellate, laterally compressed, disarticulating above glumes, with a single bisexual floret; rachilla prolonged beyond floret, with extension naked. Glumes 2, ±equalling or exceeding floret, long relative to lemmas, awnless, membranous to chartaceous, keeled; lower glume 1-nerved; upper glume 1–3-nerved. Callus short, pointed, hairy. Lemma entire at apex or incised, mucronate or minutely dorsally 1-awned, similar in texture to glumes or slightly firmer, ±chartaceous, keeled, 3 or 5-nerved. Palea awnless and without apical setae, not keeled, several-nerved (often 4-nerved). Stamens 3. Caryopsis longitudinally grooved; hilum long-linear, c. 2/3 of caryopsis length.
