Characteristics

A creeper. It can grow 30 m long and be 32 cm around. The young stems have grey hairs. The leaves are leathery. The leaf blade is 7-12 cm long by 3-6 cm wide. It tapers to the tip. There can be a few to many flowers in a group. The flowers are white to yellow with a pink tube. The fruit are 12 cm across. They are orange. The seeds are 8-2 mm long.

Corolla tube 8–17 mm. long, slender, slightly inflated in the lower 1/3, outer surface pubescent above the level of the calyx, the indumentum sometimes continuing on to the corolla lobes; inner surface glabrous; corolla lobes much shorter than to slightly exceeding tube, elliptic, rounded or attenuate at apex, ciliate with crispate white hairs.
Leaves moderately coriaceous, drying glossy dark brown above and mat brown below, often with apex deflexed so that the leaf will not lie flat; petiole 18–25 mm. long; lamina 7–12 x 3–6 cm., ovate to oblong-elliptic, the apex acuminate or cuspidate-acuminate, the base rounded or acuminate.
Upper leaf surface sparsely pubescent, midrib puberulent; all nerves impressed; lower leaf surface sparsely appressed-pubescent, especially on midrib; all nerves raised, the tertiary reticulation conspicuous; venation with lateral nerves well spaced, curved towards the leaf apex.
Inflorescences few-to many-flowered capitate cymes arranged in long terminal panicles, with axes greyish-pubescent.
Stamens inserted 1·5–2·5 mm. from base of corolla tube; anthers 1–1·5 mm. long.
Fruit up to 12 cm. in diam., subglobose, orange; seeds 8–22 mm. long.
Flowers white to yellow with pink or violet tube, sweet-scented.
Style, clavuncle and stigma c. 1·5–2 mm. long.
Calyx 1·2–2·5 mm. long, densely pubescent.
Ovary 0·5–1 mm. long, conical, puberulent.
Young stems rufous or greyish puberulent.
