A grass that grows in tufts. It keeps growing from year to year. It grows 1-2 m high. It has sturdy rhizomes or underground stems. The leaves form a tuft at the base. These are long and narrow and 30-50 cm long. The leaves on the stalk are 10-15 cm long and 3-5 mm wide. They taper to a soft point. The edges are thickened. The flowers are straw coloured or dull purple. They are 5-15 cm long and 1 m wide. The flower spikelets are in clusters. They are 6-11 mm long. They are densely hairy.

Spikelets lanceolate to narrowly ovate, broadest below the middle, 6–11 mm. long; lower glume sparsely pilose to densely villous, 3–7-nerved, acute to setaceously acuminate; lower lemma densely ciliate, the hairs 1 mm. long and projecting from the spikelet.

Involucre 5–10 mm. long including awn, bearded below, glabrous to villous above, without cartilaginous margin, acute to acuminate and then often attenuate to an awn up to 4 mm. long.
Leaf laminae 2–7 mm. wide, flat, the base as wide as the sheath, the margins thickened and often crinkled.
Inferior lemma hirsute above.
Panicle 5–25 cm. long.
Culms 30–100 cm. high.
