Characteristics

Tufted herb to 15 cm high; up to 5 tufts from rootstock. Leaves fleshy, lanceolate to spathulate, usually 4.5-8 cm long, usually 3-6 mm wide, entire to serrulate. Flowering stalks 9-16 cm long, usually twice as long as leaves; heads compact. Sepals 3.5-4.5 mm long. Petals usually 6.5-8.5 mm long, usually bright scarlet; wings unequal, 0.2-1.5 mm wide. Ovary 4-5 mm long; style 2.5-3.5 mm long; indusium bearded on upper side. Fruit 7-9 mm long; seeds usually 7-9 pairs.
