Characteristics

Perennial herbs, glabrous except indusium. Stems 1-many; rootstock woody. Leaves radical, linear to spathulate, entire to serrulate. Inflorescence cymose, compound, 1-5 heads each of 1-5 monochasia, each of 1-3 flowers; bracts and bracteoles leaf-like; flowers sessile. Sepals linear to lanceolate. Corolla bilabiate, red, light blue or cream; tube open nearly to base adaxially, obliquely spreading abaxially; abaxial lobes lanceolate, the wings rounded on free parts; shorter adaxial lobes falcate, the wings rounded on opposite margins, auriculate on adjacent margins. Filaments free; anthers cohering in a tube. Ovary inferior, 2-locular; ovules numerous, axial; indusium cupular, glabrous or bearded. Fruit capsular; valves 4, longitudinal. Seeds with hardened epidermis.
