Characteristics

Culms erect or geniculate, 10–70 cm high, unbranched, 2–4-noded. Leaves basal and cauline; sheath glabrous, often reddish; ligule 2–5 mm long, obtuse to truncate, toothed; blade flat, to 12 cm long, 1–4 mm wide when fresh (becoming inrolled on drying), adaxially scabrous to shortly hispid on nerves, abaxially smooth and glabrous. Panicles ±cylindrical, contracted, moderately dense but often interrupted near base, 3–20 cm long, light green to purplish. Spikelets 2–2.8 mm long; pedicel 0.5–2 mm long. Glumes slightly unequal, scaberulous along keel in upper half; lower glume 1.5–2 mm long; upper glume 2–2.8 mm long. Callus glabrous or with a few hairs to c. 0.2 mm long. Lemma oblong-lanceolate, mostly slightly shorter than or equal to upper glume, rarely slightly longer, 2–2.5 mm long, acute, indistinctly nerved, scabrous above middle; awn c. 8 mm long (to 15 mm long in overseas specimens), attached c. 0.5 mm below lemma apex, straight or weakly flexuose. Palea c. 3/4 length of lemma, truncate, membranous. Anthers 0.3–0.4 mm long.
