Characteristics

Annuals, weakly caespitose, bisexual. Culm nodes glabrous. Ligule an unfringed membrane, acute or obtuse. Inflorescences paniculate, sometimes contracted. Spikelets pedicellate, laterally compressed, disarticulating above glumes, with 1 bisexual floret; rachilla shortly prolonged beyond floret, or terminated by a female-fertile floret, the rachilla extension, when present, with incomplete florets, glabrous. Glumes 2, unequal to subequal, slightly longer than to slightly shorter than floret, acute, awnless or shortly awned, ±keeled, shiny; lower glume 1-nerved; upper glume 3-nerved, with primary nerves scaberulous (in Australia). Callus glabrous or with a few short hairs. Lemma shortly bifid, 1-awned, firmer than glumes, dorsally rounded, 5-nerved; awn subapical, fine, longer than lemma, straight or weakly flexuose. Palea 2-nerved, 2-keeled. Lodicules toothed, membranous, glabrous. Stamens 3. Ovary glabrous. Caryopsis free from both lemma and palea, longitudinally grooved; hilum short; embryo small.
