Characteristics

Perennial vines; latex white. Roots fibrous. Leaves petiolate, herbaceous; colleters present. Inflorescence of 2–4 fascicles. Corolla salverform; tube cylindrical; lobes free at tips, valvate. Annular corona absent; corolline corona of 5 discrete lobes adnate to base of staminal column and sides of corolla tube; gynostegial corona absent. Stamens connate into gynostegium, not markedly capitate. Anthers 2-locular with terminal appendage; pollen in linear tetrads; pollinaria with 2 pendulous, ellipsoidal pollinia lacking pellucid germinating mouth; corpusculum oblong, with flap of clear tissue at apex; caudicles not winged, not geniculate. Style-head elongate-rostrate. Follicles ovoid. Seeds flattened, ovate, comose at micropylar end.

Corona attached to corolla tube, of 5 ovate or ligulate scales appressed to the staminal tube. Filaments united in a short tube; anthers terminated by a small incurved membrane. Follicles leathery, smooth, sometimes inflated.
