Characteristics

Compactly tufted perennials. Culms 40–125 cm high, branched from lower nodes, terete; internodes smooth. Leaves: ligule to 0.5 mm long; blade involute or flat or conduplicate, setaceous, to 13 cm long, to 1 mm wide. Inflorescences 15–30 cm long, 1–10 cm wide, loosely contracted or ±open; branches not appressed, to 7 cm long, naked in lower half. Glumes inverse, entire, acuminate, awned, glabrous; lower glume caducous, 7.7–15 mm long, 1–3-nerved, laterals faint; upper glume 6.5–14 mm long, 1-nerved. Lemma 7–9 mm long, shorter than both glumes, involute, smooth, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; groove smooth; column absent; awns slightly but visibly unequal; median awn 13–22 mm long; lateral awns 9–18 mm long, flattened. Caryopsis furrowed in T.S., 4.5–6 mm long, more than twice embryo length.
