Densely caespitose perennial, 25–60(–120) cm. high.. Leaf-blades 5–25 mm. long, involute, up to 3 mm. wide when flattened.. Panicle spike-like, 5–20 cm. long and about 1 cm. wide, sometimes interrupted below; branches usually hairy in their axils.. Spikelets enclosed by the glumes; glumes sub-equal, narrowly lanceolate, 8–12 mm. long, the lower a little longer or a little shorter than the upper, acuminate or tapering to an awn-point up to 2 mm. long; lemma subterete, 6–8 mm. long, scaberulous on the keel and sometimes also on the flanks in the upper half, passing directly into the awns without articulation; callus 0.8 mm. long, broadly linear, narrowly obtuse at the tip; awns subequal, 15–22 mm. long, rigid.
