Lemma 3·5-4 mm. long, ±scaberulous towards the apex, glabrous and smooth at the base; callus 0·3-0·4 mm. long, obtuse, densely short-hairy; beak c. 0·5-1 mm. long, scaberulous; awns scabrous, slightly spreading; central awn 1·2-1·5 cm. long, the lateral ones 0·8-1 cm. long.
Leaf-laminae of the lower leaves up to 40 x 0·2-0·25 cm., flat, spirally curled, when old densely nerved, with prominent, flattened, much-raised marginal nerves, scabrid on the nerves, usually with scattered long hairs above, glabrous and smooth beneath.
Panicle 13-20 cm. long, long-exserted, contracted, more or less interrupted in the lower part, with a scabrid axis; branches usually single, angular, much-branched, appressed, scabrous, the lowermost 3-5 cm. long, naked at the base.
Ligule a densely short-ciliate rim; auricles barbate; collar glabrous or slightly pubescent.
Culms erect, branched at the base, glabrous, smooth, 2-3-noded; nodes glabrous, smooth.
Spikelets purplish-green or brownish, with scaberulous pedicels.
Leaf-sheaths lax, somewhat keeled, glabrous, smooth.
