Characteristics

Loosely tufted annuals. Culms to 50 cm high, branched, terete; internodes smooth, glabrous. Leaves: ligule to 1 mm long; blade involute or flat, to 15 cm long, to 1.5 mm wide. Inflorescences 10–20 cm long, 5–12 cm wide, ±open; branches not appressed, to 10 cm long, naked at base. Glumes normal, acuminate, entire, aristulate, 1-nerved, scabrous or scaberulous, glabrous; lower glume persistent, 6.5–7.5 mm long; upper glume 7–8.5 mm long. Lemma 5.5–6.5 mm long, shorter than both glumes, convolute, scaberulous apically, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; column absent; awns subequal, 8–12 mm long, gently curved. Caryopsis terete, to 10.5 mm long, ±twice embryo length.
