Characteristics

Compactly tufted perennials. Culms to 65 cm high, strongly branched at lower nodes, terete; internodes smooth, glabrous, glaucous; nodes glabrous, dark mauve. Leaves: ligule to 0.2 mm long; blade involute or flat or conduplicate, flexuose at maturity, to 10 cm long, to 3 mm wide. Inflorescences 8–24 cm long, 0.2–0.3 cm wide, densely congested and spicate; branches tightly appressed, 1–3 cm long, bearing spikelets from base. Glumes normal, entire, glabrous; lower glume 8–10 mm long, aristulate, 1–3-nerved; upper glume 11–12 mm long, awned, 1-nerved. Lemma 9–10 mm long, subequal to lower glume, convolute, usually smooth, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; column absent; awns subequal, 14–17 mm long, straight. Caryopsis terete, 6–7 mm long.
