Characteristics

Loosely tufted perennials. Culms 22–43 cm high, unbranched, compressed; internodes scaberulous, glabrous. Leaves: ligule to 0.3 mm long; blade flat or conduplicate, to 25 cm long, to 3 mm wide. Inflorescences 8–13.5 cm long, 4–10 cm wide, densely congested and spicate; branches tightly appressed, to 0.8 cm long, bearing spikelets from base. Glumes normal, acuminate, entire, 1-nerved, scabrous on keel, glabrous; lower glume 7–13 mm long, aristulate; upper glume 15–19.3 mm long, awned. Lemma 6–13 mm long, subequal to lower glume, convolute, smooth, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; column absent; awns slightly but visibly unequal; median awn 16–66 mm long, straight; lateral awns 13–53 mm long, terete or flattened. Caryopsis terete, 6.6–8 mm long, ±twice embryo length.
