Characteristics

Compactly tufted perennials. Culms to 90 cm high, branched at lower nodes, terete; internodes smooth, glabrous. Leaves: ligule to 0.5 mm long; blade flat or conduplicate, to 20 cm long, to 1.5 mm wide. Inflorescences 10–34 cm long, 4.5–7.5 cm wide, ±open; branches loosely appressed or not appressed, 2–7 cm long, bearing spikelets from base or naked at base. Glumes normal, entire, aristulate, 1-nerved, glabrous; lower glume 8–10 mm long; upper glume 9–12 mm long. Lemma 8–11 mm long, subequal to lower glume, convolute, apically scabrous to tuberculate, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; column absent; awns subequal, 16–28 mm long, gently curved. Caryopsis with a slight depression, 9.5 mm long, ±twice embryo length.
