Characteristics

Loosely tufted perennials. Culms to 45 cm high, branched at base; internodes smooth. Leaves: ligule to 0.4 mm long; blade involute, flexuose at maturity, to 10 cm long, to 1 mm wide. Inflorescences 8–17 cm long, 0.5–1 cm wide, densely congested and spicate; branches tightly appressed, 2–3.5 cm long, bearing spikelets from base. Glumes normal, acute, entire, awnless, 1-nerved, scabrous or scaberulous, glabrous; lower glume to 8 mm long; upper glume to 9 mm long. Lemma to 8 mm long, subequal to both glumes, convolute, with a scabrous marginal band, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; column absent; awns subequal, 11–13 mm long, straight. Caryopsis not seen.
