Characteristics

Compactly tufted perennials. Culms to 80 cm high, unbranched or branched, terete; internodes scaberulous, glabrous. Leaves: ligule to 0.4 mm long; blade involute and rigid, to 14 cm long, to 1 mm wide. Inflorescences 16–28 cm long, 2 cm wide, densely congested and spicate; branches tightly appressed or loosely appressed, 3–5 cm long, bearing spikelets from base. Glumes subequal, entire, acute, awnless, 1-nerved, glabrous; lower glume 6–8 mm long; upper glume 6.5–9 mm long. Lemma c. 6 mm long, subequal to both glumes, convolute, smooth, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; column absent; awns subequal, to 14 mm long, gently curved; lateral awns terete. Caryopsis terete, to 4.5 mm long.
