Compactly tufted perennials. Culms 33–85 cm high, strongly branched, terete or compressed; internodes smooth or scaberulous, glabrous; nodes glabrous. Leaves: ligule to 0.5 mm long; blade involute, to 4 cm long, to 1 mm wide. Inflorescences 3–6 cm long, 1–5 cm wide, densely congested and spicate or loosely contracted; branches not appressed, to 9 cm long, bearing spikelets from base. Glumes normal, obtuse or acute, awnless, 1-nerved, glabrous; lower glume 2.7–4 mm long, entire; upper glume 4–7 mm long, notched or entire. Lemma 6–9.5 mm long, distinctly longer than both glumes, convolute, smooth or scabrous, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; column absent; awns subequal, 6–13 mm long, straight. Caryopsis terete, 4–6.1 mm long, more than twice embryo length.
