Characteristics

Compactly tufted coarse perennials. Culms 50–120 cm high, strongly branched; internodes smooth. Leaves: ligule to 0.5 mm long; blade involute or rarely flat, or conduplicate, to 12 cm long, to 2.5 mm wide. Inflorescences 5–15 cm long, 0.8–2 cm wide, densely congested and spicate; branches tightly appressed, to 1.5 cm long, bearing spikelets from base. Glumes normal, acute, awnless, 1-nerved, scabrous or scaberulous, glabrous; lower glume 5–9 mm long, entire; upper glume 7–12 mm long, notched or entire. Lemma 6–11 mm long, subequal to upper glume, convolute, tuberculate apically, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; column absent; awns subequal, 11–19 mm long, straight or gently curved. Caryopsis with a slight depression, 5–8 mm long, more than twice embryo length.
