Characteristics

Compactly tufted perennials. Culms 45–75 cm high, strongly branched (fastigiate at most nodes), terete; internodes smooth, glabrous. Leaves: ligule to 0.3 mm long; blade involute, setaceous, not coiled or flexuose at maturity, to 8 cm long, to 0.5 mm wide. Inflorescences 10–15 cm long, 1 cm wide, loosely contracted; branches loosely appressed, 1–3 cm long, bearing spikelets from base. Glumes inverse or normal, 6.5–10 mm long, notched or entire, glabrous; lower glume aristulate, 3-nerved; upper glume awned, 1-nerved. Lemma 7–11 mm long, subequal to both glumes, involute, muricate apically, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; groove smooth; column absent. Awns subequal, 8–11 mm long. Caryopsis furrowed in T.S., 5–6 mm long, more than twice embryo length.
