Characteristics

Compactly tufted perennials. Culms to 50 cm high, branched, terete; internodes scaberulous, glabrous; nodes glabrous. Leaves: ligule to 0.6 mm long; blade involute, setaceous, not coiled or flexuose at maturity, to 14 cm long, to 1 mm wide. Inflorescences to 13 cm long, 1 cm wide, loosely contracted; branches loosely appressed, to 2 cm long, naked at base. Glumes inverse, entire, aristulate, 1-nerved, glabrous, scabrous on keel; lower glume caducous, 3.5–4.5 mm long, acute; upper glume 3.2–4.2 mm long, acute (and cuspidate). Lemma to 2.5 mm long, shorter than both glumes, involute, slightly tuberculate apically, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; groove tuberculate; column absent; awns slightly but visibly unequal, straight; median awn 8 mm long; lateral awns to 6 mm long, terete (at apex) or flattened (at base). Caryopsis furrowed in T.S., to 2 mm long, ±twice embryo length.
