Characteristics

Compactly tufted perennials. Culms to 75 cm high, branched, compressed; internodes smooth, glabrous. Leaves: ligule to 0.3 mm long; blade involute, not coiled or flexuose at maturity, to 21 cm long, to 1.5 mm wide. Inflorescences 7–19 cm long, to 8 cm wide, loosely contracted; branches loosely appressed, to 2.4 cm long, naked at base. Glumes normal, entire, acute, glabrous, scabrous on keel; lower glume 7–8 mm long, 3-nerved; upper glume 12–13 mm long, 1-nerved. Lemma 8–9 mm long, subequal to lower glume, convolute, scabrous apically, with a distinct articulation; column distinct, 12–14 mm long, scaberulous; awns distinctly unequal; median awn strongly recurved, to 22 mm long; lateral awns half as long as median awn, to 11 mm long, usually straight, terete. Caryopsis terete, 5.5–6 mm long, more than twice embryo length.
