Characteristics

Loosely tufted perennials. Culms 70–150 cm high, branched; internodes smooth. Leaves: ligule 0.5–1 mm long; blade flat or conduplicate, coiled at maturity, to 21 cm long, to 3 mm wide. Inflorescences 12–32 cm long, 1.5–4 cm wide, densely congested and spicate or loosely contracted; branches tightly appressed to loosely appressed, to 8 cm long, bearing spikelets from base. Glumes inverse or normal, 6–8 mm long, aristulate, 1-nerved, glabrous; lower glume entire, acute; upper glume notched. Lemma 4–5.5 mm long, involute, smooth, with a pseudoarticulation; groove tuberculate; column absent; awns subequal, 15–40 mm long; median awn straight or gently curved; lateral awns flattened. Caryopsis furrowed in T.S., to 3 mm long, more than twice embryo length.
