Compactly or loosely tufted annuals or perennials. Culms 23–128 cm high, straight, unbranched or branched or strongly branched, terete; internodes smooth or scaberulous, glabrous, sometimes glaucous. Leaves: ligule 0.3.0.5 mm long; blade flat, conduplicate or involute, mostly flexuose at maturity, to 25 cm long, to 4 mm wide. Inflorescences 8–41 cm long, 1–10 cm wide, loosely contracted; branches loosely appressed, to 2 cm long, naked at base. Glumes normal, acute, notched, glabrous, scabrous or scaberulous or smooth; lower glume 7.16 mm long, 1–3-nerved; upper glume 12–25 mm long, 1-nerved, aristulate or awned. Lemma 8–13.5 mm long, subequal to lower glume, convolute, smooth or muriculate apically or punctate, with a distinct articulation; column distinct, 18–57 mm long, to 0.3 mm thick, glabrous or scaberulous; awns slightly but visibly unequal, straight; median awn 34–78 mm long; lateral awns 27–66 mm long, terete. Caryopsis terete, 4.8–7.9 mm long.
