Loosely tufted perennials. Culms 32–155 cm high, branched, terete; internodes smooth, glabrous, glaucous. Leaves; ligule to 1 mm long; blade flat, coiled at maturity, to 30 cm long, to 4.5 mm wide. Inflorescences 13–40 cm long, 1.5–4 cm wide, loosely contracted; branches loosely appressed, to 8 cm long, bearing spikelets from base. Glumes inverse, acute, notched, glabrous; lower glume caducous, 9–18.5 mm long, 1 (sub 3)-nerved; upper glume 6.4–13 mm long, aristulate, 1-nerved. Lemma 3.7–9 mm long, shorter than both glumes, involute, smooth or scabrous apically, with a pseudoarticulation or, rarely, an indistinct articulation; groove tuberculate or, rarely, smooth; column absent; awns slightly but visibly unequal; median awn gently curved, 14–46 mm long; lateral awns 11–40 mm long, terete. Caryopsis furrowed in T.S., 3.1–7 mm long, more than twice embryo length or ±twice embryo length.

Found in Acacia, Callitris, Eucalyptus and Astrebla communities on red earths, sands and alluvial soils.
