Loosely tufted perennials. Culms 41–155 cm high, strongly branched, terete; internodes smooth, glabrous; nodes glabrous. Leaves: ligule 0.5–1 mm long; blade flat, coiled at maturity, to 23 cm long, to 4 mm wide. Inflorescences 11–42 cm long, 1.5–4 cm wide, densely congested and spicate or loosely contracted; branches loosely appressed, to 7 cm long, bearing spikelets from base. Glumes subequal, acute, glabrous; lower glume caducous, 6–14 mm long, entire, 1 (rarely sub 3)-nerved; upper glume 6–12 mm long, notched, aristulate, 1-nerved. Lemma 4–8 mm long, shorter than both glumes, involute, punctate, with a pseudoarticulation; groove smooth; column absent; awns subequal, 8–30 mm long, gently curved; lateral awns flattened. Caryopsis furrowed in T.S., 5–8 mm long, ±twice embryo length.
Grows in Acacia, Eucalyptus, Eremophila, Gidgee (Acacia cambagei), Mulga (Acacia aneura) and Melaleuca communities on red earths, loams, sands and alluvialsoils.
