Characteristics

Compactly tufted perennials with many rigid filiform leaves clustered from the base. Culms to 90 cm high, unbranched, terete; internodes scaberulous, glabrous. Leaves: ligule to 0.2 mm long; blade conduplicate, setaceous and rigid, to 20 cm long, to 1 mm wide. Inflorescences 10–37 cm long, 1 cm wide, densely congested and spicate; branches tightly appressed, 2–4 cm long, bearing spikelets from base. Glumes normal, entire, acute, 1-nerved, smooth, glabrous; lower glume 6–9 mm long; upper glume 7–10 mm long. Lemma 6–9 mm long, subequal to both glumes, convolute, smooth, without an articulation or pseudoarticulation; column absent; awns subequal, 6–15 mm long, flattened. Caryopsis terete, to 5.5 mm long, more than twice embryo length.
